In a movie based on my life, who would play me?

You know you've read a great fic when, three days later, you're still thinking about it.

Show Me A Garden is a beautiful, heartbreaking fic from the hd_holidays fest, without a doubt the one that has affected me the most so far. I know the non-con warning is scaring some people away, but please, don't let it: the scenes are brief and non-explicit and provide the impetus for an incredible story of pain and comfort, passion and healing.

The set-up is one you've seen before: Harry and Draco are held captive together during the war and forge a bond that turns into something more. But no matter how many times you've seen it done, you haven't seen it done like this. Early on, Harry and Draco each go through something terrible - the rest of the story explores their reactions to these traumatic events, the way they bring them closer together and force them apart. Part of why this story is so moving is how dead-on the psychology feels: the author doesn't go the easy, loving hurt/comfort route. These boys are damaged, each in their own (completely in-character) way, and their journey is a difficult one - but that only makes the ending all the sweeter.

I am completely in love with this fic, and all the ways it made me feel. If you can stomach the (brief) scenes of non-con, I highly recommend you read it. It will stick with you for days.

1. Yes, yes, I too am in love with Rahm Emanuel. I want to be his dirty, shameful piece on the side. I'd like to kneel under his desk and suck him off while he calls up some fuckwit from the GOP and threatens to have his family sent to a modern-day gulag. That would be hot.

2. Gattaca. OMG. I just watched it again the other day and WOW, the slash potential. A quick search suggests there are about eight people in this fandom. Make that 9! (As soon as I have time - maybe around 2012? - I'm writing some Vincent/Jerome. Yum.)

3. Question: If this guy gets his way and people are allowed to marry fictional characters in Japan, who would you all marry?* I'm leaning towards Richard MacDuff, from Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Computer programmers with a sense of humour make me hot.

*NB: You will be awarded no points for claiming Mr. Darcy. Yes, yes, I know. No.

First off, Thank You! to everyone who has come bearing birthday wishes, fic, presents... You have all made my day. I will thank each of you properly in a post later as I don't want to leave anyone out and I'm far too energetic to code right now.

Because the thing is, in twelve hours I'm going to wake up, get dressed, and walk across the street to my local voting station (ah, the joys of living in a small town!) and pull my lever for Obama. I've been looking forward to this day for ages and now that's it's finally here I find I'm practically shaking with excitement (and also with caffeine, but mostly excitement). We're just over 24 hours away from making this a reality.

So if you're like me, and you're going to be up all night and glued to the TV screen tomorrow, biting your nails to the nub - well, you know where to find me. Maybe we can obsess together. :D

You guys: I has Harry/Scorpius! It's simple and short and not at all sweet, which just makes me love it all the more. Scorpius is such a manipulative little slut, and Harry knows it and can't bring himself to care because he's hopelessly addicted to the way Scorpius makes him feel. I don't even know how to enumerate the reasons I love this fic; I'm going to have to make do with quoting my favourite passage:

And this, this is why he keeps coming back; the grasping, shivering heat of it, the moans, and bruises forming under his fingers and it’s push and pull and harder, faster, his teeth sinking into Scorpius’ shoulder and the boy’s hands tangled in his hair and the press of a cock between their stomachs, hot and wet and his entire body is straining, aching, tensing hard and fast and how long, how long before he comes?

So here's the thing: I don't read Snarry. At least, not consensual Snarry. But I do read this. Lyv has a way of writing that is inexplicably affecting, especially given the small number of words she uses. The girl piles on layer after layer of heart-breaking, gut-twisting emotion in only a few thousand words and somehow manages to leave me breathless every time. The sex is hot, even more so than your average fic because there is so much emotion driving her character's actions. On top of that, it's all gorgeously written. She has a way with words, she does. A brilliant way. Go read, I implore you!

Oh my god, you guys, drop whatever you're doing and go read The Evil Devil Child and the Perfect Gift RIGHT NOW.

It's the latest hp_cross_fest fic, and it is so awesome I cannot describe. There's barely a hint of plot: for the most part, it's 16,500 words of filthy, kinky smut. The pairings are a tiny bit squicky, I suppose: Albus Severus/Scorpius, Albus Severus/Scorpius/Draco, Harry/Scorpius, and Harry/Draco, and all four together. But please, please do not let this deter you from reading. It's brain-meltingly hot and written by (I'm fairly positive) one of my very favourite authors, and I ASSURE you it's worth reading.

What are you waiting for? Oh, you're making sure you have extra batteries? Okay then. Very well. But once you've got them - go read!!!

99.9% of the time, my immune system kicks ass. My parents were of the "let them eat dirt!" school of parenting, and it's served me well over the years. Not today though: I have strep throat, a lingering cold, and a UTI all at once. I barely made it through class, and there's no way I'll be able to focus on either studying OR writing tonight.

Were any of you Felicity fans back in the day (and I mean wayyyyyy back)? Do you remember that episode where Noel takes the smart drugs made with beet juice and it turns him into a raving lunatic (um, spoiler warning?) and he storms into the library and yells "THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!" at the top of his lungs?

Yeah. That is how I feel right now. Because I'm finally getting around to reading mistful's Quality of Mercy, and it turns out there may not be a happy Harry/Draco ending. Seriously? Seriously? Three years, 31 chapters, more sexual tension than I thought my body could handle, and there's not going to be a fucking happy ending?

THIS. IS. UNACCEPTABLE.

I need to read something sweet now. Right now. Nothing sappy-fluffy, but something that ends on a high note, or else I will not sleep tonight.

Please to be reccing me? I was going to write some porn instead, but I can't concentrate enough in this state of mind. I love you all to bits, by the by, and rest assured I would NEVER do that to you. (If I ever got off my lazy ass and wrote something with a plot, that is.)

Pardon me while I gush like a little girl over the brilliance that is this fic. What? You've never heard of it? That's because it's the latest posting courtesy of hd_inspired and hasn't yet received it's fair share of "omg you must read this it is SO GOOD!" But it will.

I wish I could explain, but I'm finding it difficult to even sum up: In short, Harry is Headmistress McGonagall's personal assistant, Draco is an ex-Unspeakable, and several students have gone missing. Of course the two team up to find them, but that's not the whole story, not by a long shot. The storytelling in this fic is miraculous - endless amounts of exposition turn me off, and there isn't a hint of that in sight. Instead, we jump right in to the action as seen from Harry's point of view, taking side trips into backstory when necessary.

And that's one of the best parts of the fic, watching the way Harry and Draco interact now and learning piece-by-piece how they got there. The relationship they have is just wonderful - I'm reminded of mistful's work of genius, Drop Dead Gorgeous. Draco is absolute perfection: caustic and hilarious, but also (secretly) vulnerable inside and deadly fierce when the situation calls for it. If I weren't already in love with him, I would be now. Harry is just the way I love him best - empty and lost and scarred by the knowledge that everyone he loves, he loses. He's completely forgotten how to live, forgotten that it's okay to want to live. And of course Draco is the only thing that sparks him anymore, but that's terrifying as well, because what if he gets too close and then one day Draco is just... gone? It's just my sort of angst and I felt every heartbreaking moment of Harry's fear and doubt and reluctance with my whole body.

So yes, in conclusion, I order you all to read this fic. It's on the longer side - 35,000 words, so clear your schedule - but it's completely engrossing and altogether wonderful. The story has dark elements but most of it is told with a comedic tone - not quite gallows humour, but twisted enough to remind you that tragedy truly does make the best comedy. And it's only got a pg-13 rating, so there's really nothing to squick you out! (By the way, this ought to tell you something right here - I, Lindsay, am recc'ing a fic that has literally no sex in it. At all. Not even close. But the story is written such that sex is not necessary to make you feel the fire down below. Sexual tension ahoy!)
